Although we are retaining him for the occasional full length review, David Pitt has had to give up his Between The Lines column due to the pressures of his own writing career.  Carlton Brown is also taking a leave of absence until later in the year.  And D. L. Browne will be taking a brief sabbatical from reviews while she goes on the road to promote her latest book.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What do we do?

reviews mystery fiction with a bit of news and commentary added.

Our reviewers have several ways of designating a book of special interest, including RECOMMENDED, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED or VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and the ultimate accolade, a Black Diamond -- -- indicating a book of outstanding merit.  We do not review true crime and rarely review horror.  We do occasionally cover biographical and reference books.

Special features include CLASSIC CORNER, reviews of mystery classics recently re-read or re-released.  U. K. REPORT reviews British mysteries not currently available in the US.  ODDS & ENDS is a potpourri of news, convention information, awards, and whatever else comes across my desk.

Reviews cover large and small presses, new authors and long time favorites.  We review Print On Demand and other new publishing formats but we do not review books only available on line or in e-book or similar formats.

When there is a button on the first page for SPECIAL FEATURE you will find an article or commentary about some aspect of the mystery genre.

PAPERBACK PAGE reprints reviews previously published when the hard cover was released.  Books being reviewed for the first time, even though they are paperback editions of a previously released hard cover, will still appear on the individual reviewer's page.

Our Format.  We review hard cover, trade paperback and paperback books.  Hard cover books are identified by publisher, month and date (i.e. Ballantine Books  February, 2001).  Trade paperback or Trade paperback originals will look like this:  Signet Trade PBO 1/01; Pocket Books Trade pb 1/01.  Paperbacks or paperback originals are identified by publisher, month and year (i.e. Avon pb 1/01 or  Berkley PBO 1/01).  On small press reviews you will find the ISBN number to make it easier for you to order from your favorite mystery bookseller.

When do we publish?

publishes six issues a year, posting at the end of February, April, June, August October and December.

Submission Guidelines

The policy of is to review books concurrent with publication, either hard cover or paperback.  To that end, we require at least two months lead time prior to publication to enable us to consider a book for review.

How do you navigate the newsletter?

To view a complete list of the titles reviewed, click on "Table of Contents" on the front page.

To view a complete list of authors reviewed, click on the "Author Index" on the front page.

To browse through each reviewer's reviews, click on the reviewer's name on the front page.

Why does it take so long to download the newsletter?

Ah, well, you see -- we do a lot of reviews.  And there are a lot of graphics such as photos of authors and dust jacket covers.  When it comes to a choice between less reviews to accomplish faster downloads vs. longer downloads but lots of content -- it's no contest.  The reviews win.  Please have patience!

Who are the reviewers?

We have reviewers from all over the United States, Canada and in the United Kingdom.  All of us who review are lovers of mystery fiction -- from cozies to hard-boiled, legal and medical thrillers to historicals.  Many of the reviewers are themselves writers -- published and unpublished, in the mystery field and outside it.

While I'm on the subject of reviewers, although we share a common language with the UK and Canada, those of our reviewers who live there sometimes phrase or spell things differently than we might.  You will find that I keep those phrases or spellings -- just as I hope that American publishers retain the phrasing and spelling of British and Canadian authors when they publish them here.

The Guest Review button will appear on the first page from time to time and will include reviews from those who are not regular contributors to and thus don't have their own page.

We hope you will check out our reviews often.  If you have any questions please don't hesitate to e mail me at the address below.

Happy reading!
