AS THE WORLD CHURNS
TAMAR MYERS
Obsidian  February, 2008

Magdalena Yoder is finally married to her babester, Gabe. Of course this happy event doesn't take her mind off of other important matters, such as her money. Mags has decided to hold the first annual Hernia Holstein Competition, which brings in competitors from all over the world. Unfortunately, along with the cows the participants bring along violence when the originator of the contest is beaten up. Now, Magdalena must figure out who would want to harm Doc Shafor before someone else gets hurt, or even worse, before someone demands a refund!

AS THE WORLD CHURNS is a delightfully wacky entry into the Magdalena Yoder series. The series has a fresh feel to it with many new twist and turns taking place in Magdalena 's personal life. While sometimes it feels as though the mystery takes a backseat to other personal matters, every part of the book is interesting and well written. Thankfully, Magdalena has stopped wailing so much, which was my only complaint about the previous books. Magdalena is a likable character, one that it is easy to spend time with. AS THE WORLD CHURNS is a fun read, one that includes delicious sounding ice cream recipes.

THE TIMER GAME
SUSAN ARNOUT SMITH
St. Martin ’s Minotaur  January, 2008

The Timer GameGrace Descano has been trying to pull herself together ever since tragedy struck in her life. What has been the motivating factor in her trying to stay sober is her daughter, who she loves more than anything.  As a crime scene tech, she doesn't get to see Katie as often as she would like but it is a job that she needs. However, that job begins to intrude on her personal life after Grace shoots a man. The next day her daughter is kidnapped and it appears the madman that has her is connected to the  shooting. Grace must figure out a way to save her baby and herself before everything she has worked so hard for is destroyed.

THE TIMER GAME moves at a very brisk pace and the suspense never stops. Grace is a likable character who is very easy to root for. Her problems are very realistic as are her reactions to the problems in her life. The whole book is captivating, never leaving room for rest, for the characters or the reader. The ending is stunning and I am hoping there will be many more books about Grace.

DEAD OF THE DAY
KAREN E. OLSON
Obsidian PBO 11/07

Annie Seymour is a crime reporter for the New Haven Herald and, while she loves doing it, she has been feeling a little burnt out lately. Then along comes that dead body in the harbor. Annie is excited to have another story to write about instead of the one to which she has been assigned. Writing a profile of the new chief of police is exactly what has Annie tired of her job. That is, of course, until the new police chief is shot by a drive-by shooter. When the shooting turns out to be intended to kill, a new investigation opens up that keeps Annie busy trying to keep up with her job and her life.

DEAD OF THE DAY is the third entry in the Annie Seymour series and with each book, Olson grows as a writer. DEAD OF THE DAY was tightly plotted and written with wonderful expression. The dialogue is fresh while staying true to every character. The only story line that drags a bit is Annie's love life. By the third book, Vinny and Annie's relationship felt a bit repetitious. Luckily Olson has a vivid imagination and makes every character and scene come alive.

UNMANNED
LOIS GREIMAN
Dell PBO 11/07

Psychologist Christina McMullen is used to helping people overcome big problems that are taking over their lives. However, she has one huge problem that seems to keep interfering in her own life and that problem just happens to be that people keep trying to kill her! Just as things are calming down from the last attempt on her life, Christina meets a cute guy who offers to fix her garage for her. When he comes over to look at it, he gets gunned down and the police seem to think that Christina was the intended target, especially when it comes out that the victim was a hit man. Christina needs to help herself and figure out what is going on before someone permanently fixes the problem for her -- by killing her!

UNMANNED is the fourth book in the Christina McMullen series. Christina is such a unique and interesting character. She always comes off as smart but still very human in the fact that she makes decisions that seem right at the time but not so much later. She also has a really fun relationship going on with Lieutenant Rivera that always keeps the chemistry and the action going. UNMANNED is an easy, fun read that hits just the right notes at all times.
